High Performance Data Centers Inc. Energy Use and Project Details
The energy savings from advanced data center cooling strategies will
be covered. Data center performance metrics such as Power Utilization
Effectiveness (PUE) will be explained. By 2020, the carbon
footprint of data centers is expected to exceed that of the airline
industry. NREL’s new data center design included multiple energy
saving techniques that is resulting in 90% annual savings. CU’s National
Snow & Ice data center was a retrofit that included multiple energy
saving techniques that is also resulting in 90% annual savings. The case
studies will cover data center features, performance (energy,
temperature), and other project details. NCAR will discuss their new
high efficiency data center in Cheyenne, WY.
The NWSC in Cheyenne is slated to be 89% more efficient than typical
data centers, and up to 10% more efficient than state of the art
facilities operating today. One of the most significant advantages is
that the NWSC is designed from the ground up around its mission, which
allows it to be vastly more efficient than retrofitting existing
buildings. NCAR and the project partners estimate that the NWSC will be
four times more efficient than the current Mesa Laboratory computing
facility.
